I’ve been selling on the internet since 1996 and many times people tell me they want to start their own internet business, but they don’t know what to sell. They receive a constant overload of information about this or that product, a variety of affiliate programs, resale rights products, ebooks about developing your own products – the list goes on and on.
It’s difficult to sort thru the tons of info out there and find real answers regarding what’s the right path for you. There are so many options, ideas and opportunities available, making the right choice can seem to be a nearly impossible task.
I’m going to try to help you narrow down the choices to the ones that are probably right for you – that way, you won’t waste your time with things that aren’t likely to be productive for you.
First of all, it’s vitally important that you sell a product that you truly believe in. It must have value to both you and your potential customers. It also must be something that you have more than a passing interest in, because you’ll need to become an ‘expert’ in the field of the product you’re selling.
Take a quick lesson from TV sports commentators – you know, the guys that comment on all the plays of the big games as they’re being played. Notice their enthusiasm for the game. They don’t just dryly report what’s happening on the playing field – they make the game come alive with their excitement.
Well, that’s the kind of excitement you need to have about your product. That excitement will spill over to your prospects and help convert them into paying customers.
What is it that interests you? Computer programming? If so, maybe you could develop an easy to follow course to help beginning programmers or maybe a book of tips & tricks for the more experienced programmers.
Maybe you’re interested in camping and hiking. You could write an ebook about what to do for survival if you become lost in the wilderness. Or perhaps you could compile a list of the best camping areas in various parts of the country.
The point here is that in order to be highly successful, you’ll need to pick a subject in which you have a lot of personal interest. Sit down and make a list of all the subjects that come to mind. Even if you think of something that seems wild and outrageous, put it on your list. With a little thought, you should be able to come up with 20 or 30 ideas.
Next, go thru your list and underline the ideas you think you could really get into (mentally). Try to have at least 5 to choose from.
Now that you’ve narrowed the field to 5 possibilities, it’s time to do a little market research. Go to Google and search for forums related to one of your ideas. Let’s say that one of your ideas involves radio controlled model helicopters. Just search for 'forum RC helicopters' and you’ll see a big list of helicopter forums. Go to these forums and read the posts. Look at the questions people have. This will give you a good indication of the level of interest and you could also come up with a few product ideas to satisfy any needs you discover.
Once you reach a decision about your product choice, it’s time to find a source for that product. If it’s an ebook, you could write it yourself. Or you could find an ebook that’s already written and has an affiliate program, perhaps thru Clickbank. You may even be able to find a relevant ebook that’s available with resale rights. That way, you’ll be able to sell it and keep all the profit.
The main issue here is that you need to choose a product that you can really get into yourself – something you can get behind wholeheartedly. If you truly see the value in what you’re selling, that value will be visible to your prospects too.
